What is "Community Challenges and Choices?
The "Community Challenges and Choices" slide presentation encourages your community to step back and examine the unique characteristics and significant elements you value and wish to preserve in your village or town.
Opportunities
The slide presentation is intended to stimulate discussion on planning for the future of your community. A set of slides highlights relationships in rural communities between the built, natural and cultural environments, to encourage comprehensive approaches to planning. Included in the presentation are examples of planning models and strategies that have been used in other villages and towns.
Script and Facilitator's Notes
A script is provided with the slide presentation that has been written to flexibly accommodate the issues concerning your town specifically-for the presenter to insert or replace slides, or to adapt the wording of the script itself. The additional column of "Notes for the Facilitator" helps guide the presenter through the script and tailor it for his/her community.
The slide presentation may also be part of a long-term strategy-to encourage active citizen participation in comprehensive community planning for your town. To assist individuals with developing this framework for community planning, included in the resource guide are suggestions to initiate the community planning process; a list of suggested reading; the slide presentation script with notes for the facilitator; and a sample community assessment tool.
Community Needs Analysis
A community needs analysis is included in the resource guide and is an effective tool to document the current conditions in your town. This survey can provide a basis for prioritizing the concerns your community wants to address. It can also be a valuable periodic measuring tool, as a record for comparison with future needs assessment.
