Rural Poverty and Residential Mobility
Rural Poverty and Residential Mobility
Kai A. Schafft, Research-Extension Associate
Department of Development Sociology
(2.4.2004) Conventional wisdom has it that individuals and families move in response to opportunity. But in disadvantaged communities and among economically insecure families, residential mobility may as often as not be in response to the conditions created by that economic insecurity. This distance seminar will concern frequent residential mobility among low income families within New York's rural communities and how this mobility is both a factor of and contributes to family and community disadvantage. We'll look in particular at the consequences for schools and other community institutions, and we'll examine the risk factors that increase the chances of frequent residential mobility. There will also be ample opportunity for a broader discussion and brainstorming about the role of extension in addressing the challenges associated with rural poverty and residential mobility.
